A while ago I wrote a blog on my foodie girl crushes. Before I go further and just in case you missed my other blog (shame on you
) the definition of the girl crush is thus….
Taken from the Urban Dictionary.com -Feelings of admiration and adoration which a girl has for another girl, without wanting to shag said girl. a nonsexual attraction, usually based on veneration (meaning, profound respect or reverence) at some level. Okay..that sorted…I will carry on.
I recently had a twitter chat with my lovely twittery mate @DazedPuckBunny, who has a very big ..er fondness, for an old actor (sorry hun, forgot his name). She was so vocal about her attraction that I went to google him, and as you can see (in the montage pic above, bottom left)…. he is pretty yummy! But to be honest it wasn’t him that captivated me in the picture, it was the most alluring Charlotte Rampling. WOW, with her head thrown back and her eyes staring straight at him, she looked so beautifully dangerous, in an ice cool skinny 70′s way. Makes me want to ditch my ample bussom and rounded hips and be her, just for a day!
There is lots of seventies inspired stuff on the catwalks this sesason to, but not in the Ziggy stardust gimmicky sense (thank gawd! don’t think my bod’s ready for a sequined jump suit, is anybody’s? apart from Bowie himself …maybe) but more the quiet, subtle coolness of the era. Kate moss’s final (sob) line for Top shop is a very good example, she has some gorgous pieces! (all on my christmas list, pretty please santa!) .
Honestly though, nothing beats the real thing. Charlotte Rampling and Jane Birkin had an effortless edgy vibe. Along with a just stunning Brigette bardot and a captivating Barbra Streisand (yes, really). The authentic 70′s cool that is so hard to capture, without being naff…well, they have in spades Honey! (yes, I know, probably because they were actually there, but still)
So curl up, grab a coffee, catch some old school fashion inspiration and check out some REAL babes….
Angelina and Scarlet, Leighton Meister and Blake Lively sorry girls, but you are mere fakers. Meet the Grand dames of ice cool, kick ass beauty…Vintage style!
Charlotte Rampling….
Why? Because Charlotte Rampling – fashion muse, mate of Juergen Teller and actress who starred in such cult movies as Georgy Girl, The Damned and The Night Porter is just so damn cool! She looks like she could kill you dead with one beautiful, sultry stare…but what a way to go! ;D
Jane Birkin ….
Why? Because she not only has the iconic look of the time and but she also had a Hermes bag named after her. In an interview for ELLE.uk Jane Birkin said : “Having a bag named after me was very flattering. I was flying to London from Paris in the 1980s and found myself sitting next to Jean-Louis Dumas, the CEO of Hermes. My Hermes organiser was too full so everything fell out next to him. He told me I should put items in the pockets and I told him, “If Hermes put pockets in, I would”. He said, “I am Mr Hernes and I’ll put pockets in for you.” A month later, he sent over a new design and asked if he could call it the Birkin bag. The proceeds from its sale have gone to charities, so it’s all been a rather useful bag.”
Now thats just too classy/cool, in my humblest!
Bardot & Streisand…Why? because, sometimes these two are so iconic we forget just how beautiful they are.
Jennifer Aniston channeled Barbra Streisand in the September issue of Harper’s Bazaar. She looked fab but you can’t beat the real thing! but you can see those pics here.
As for Bardot, you just HAVE to give it to her, in my opinion simply the sexiest woman that ever lived…ever!
And because I couldn’t leave without a recipe bit, I have been tinkering with a seventies classic for you. The Black forest Gateau, I have been experimenting with the recipe and come up with a super quick modern update on the classic. The Black Forest cup cake, all the dark choc and cherry flavor, just less of the faff.
The Blackforest Cupcake!
Ingredients -
For cake bit…
3 oz of caster sugar,
4oz of softened butter (real thing please)
2 eggs
3oz self raising flour
1 0z of coco powder
1 teaspoon of best quality vanilla essence
1 teaspoon of baking powder
40z of good dark chocolate
For “forest” topping …
1 can of pitted cherries in natural juices
1 tub of whipping cream
extra chocolate for grating on top.
METHOD- Pre-heat oven at around 180. Cream butter and sugar (I find its good to use an electric whisk for this) , then add 1 egg and half the quantity of flour, mixing well with whisk, blender or by hand. Then just add the rest of the flour, the other egg, baking powder and vanilla. And mix. Break the choc using a bag and rolling pin (or processor, rolling pin more fun
) dust with a tiny bit of flour to stop them all sinking to the bottom of the cake and then stir into the cake batter. Pile into cup cake cases and plonk in the oven, for around 2o mins. Then take out and cool slightly. While they are cooking, poor the cherries and juice into a pan with a good handful of sugar and put on to boil, (you can also add a bit of cherry liquor at this point to if you like) when boiling point is reached turn it down and simmer for around 30 mins or until the juice has made a thick syrup and the cherries have softened slightly (this is great on ice cream too!). Then just whisk up the cream to soft peaks, cut open the top of the cooled cup cake. Spoon on cherries and dollop of cream. For a final flourish add a fine grattering of dark choc….. YUM!
