Things I wish my mum had told me….

ellie-young

Ellie at 4, so sweet!

Eloise is going to be 15 this year (eek!!)…

And a thought  has been on my mind for a while.

ellie-now

Ellie-now, bless her!

I have been thinking of all the good advise I wish I’d had at her age. All the little and big stuff that would have made my last 15 years easier.

So I thought I’d write it down, (and share it with you guys) .

Not sure it’ll help, but its what Ive learnt…

Well the important stuff anyways ;D

I will start with the small stuff ….

 Beauty…. Don’t wear to much make-up-

There is nothing worse than looking like you tried too hard (except maybe not trying hard enough ;) )

1) So follow this simple rule, if your wearing a “in your face” lipstick then go easy on the eye shadow, and visa versa.

It always tends to look best. Unless your Scarlett  Johansson, and I have my suspicions that she is an alien or robot from planet  “way too good looking and sexy” so she doesn’t count.

2) The same applies for jewelery. A good necklace needs no earings and a good pair of earings need no necklace.

3) Don’t EVER shave your legs with your dads razor. Or you’ll spend at least 3 weeks in agony, covering them up and waiting for the skin to grow back.

I know this one to my cost… hot summer of 1989 ;D

House work-

1) iron shirts when they are still damp….  That’s all I really honestly know about the strange art of  house work that’s worth repeating!

Love..Life…& beyond -

My dad always used to say….”Helen, You Can’t Polish a Turd”….

This applies to so many things….a huge spot, a bad hair cut. But most of all to the opposite  sex.

If you follow this, you will save yourself allot of time and heart ache and you’ll leave yourself open to someone really good!

To be filed along with leopards and spots ;D

2) Don’t be overly hard on yourself and your looks. I don’t know anybody who doesn’t  say they look at photos of themselves when they were younger and wish they’d realized how hot they were!

I am not kidding you, I know right now you don’t think your not pretty, thin or hot enough, but you are!

You will look back at photos of yourself in 10 years time and go, blimey I was gorgeous!  (or at least passable!) Why couldn’t I see it?

The evil thing of it is, by then its to late. So enjoy it now. ;D

This is me just 3 years ago, I remember looking at this and thinking I looked old and fat. Wish I was that old and fat now, is all I can say about that!100_1192

3) …. and most importantly, If there is something you want to do, don t be afraid to do it.

Even if its a bit frightening. Things you don’t do when your young can cause bitterness and uneasiness when your older.

So in the great words of Nike, ” Just Do It!” (this does not apply to drugs, alcohol or boys.. just in case you were wondering) ;D

So thats it! i very much doubt  she will listen, don’t think I would have done  at her age either! ;D

I wish somebody had given me the same advice at that age, I really do!
And, it’s clear to see wher Ellie gets her gorgeous looks from – WOW! You are one scrummy mummy indeed ; )

Thanku very much! maybe we should all get together and write a long list of wisdom to pass on, we could make it into a book… Things I wish my Mum had told me ;D xxxx

Lots of good advice! Love the ‘you can’t polish a turd’ one. And the ‘looking hot’ advice, you’re right: 10 years from now things are going to look worse! We should make the most of it. You look great on that photo!

  3. Andrea says:

Wit wooo!! Look at you in your cozzie!!

Lovely post, really enjoyed it. Well done!

Firstly, hubba hubba on the photo! – I have never and will never look that good in a bikini (though I did scribble CALLANETICS randomly on pages in my diary after seeing it – Thailand in 8 weeks and SO much work to be done on this ‘ere bod)! And I don’t tan. At all. Jinner you see!
Great advice and really well put together and I love the ‘turd’ and ‘hot’ bits!
I had the weirdest dream last night where I was in an 80′s style cropped top and had a flat tum and pert puppies and no cellulite…basically a “when I was hot” dream – must have been in my 20′s! Oh the grief I felt when I awoke to my 39 year gravity-stricken and elasticity-lacking form!!!!
    :)

I am that 10 years older than you are now and you are sooooo right, when I look at pics of me just 5 years ago I was gorgeous compared to how I look now (or how I feel I look now)! It’s a girl thing! we always think we could look better, or when looking back did look better. Your advice is wonderful I hope she listens to you and appreciates what a fab mum you are. My guess is if she is anything like my 15 yr old son, she won’t at the moment. But you can bet your bottom dollar (whatever that means) that she will look back on this living diary in the years to come and appreciate how much you love her ! Big hugs darling, darling girl xxx

    • Helen says:

Thanku Karen (allaboutheboys) , you are such a sweet heart! i know you are an awful lot wiser than me so I take it as a massive compliment that i said something non-ditsy…just for once ;D

  7. Mwa says:

Great advice! And great picture. I hope she listens.

    • Helen says:

Thanku all! I must add tho, that I dont think the whole bikini situation is quite as good as it used to be! I have a nice pair of baby induced muffin tops to contend with now ;D!
And if you have any advise to add, i’d love to share it with Ellie (a young girl cant have enough good advise, right?) And I know you guys are all probably alot wiser than me! xxxx

  8. Sue says:

Great post! Can’t remember when I was last that old and fat … probably about 40 years ago!!!

  9. This made me laugh and cry. Love the whole “don’t shave your legs with your Dad’s razor.” I did that, too! Maybe it’s a rite of passage for teenage girls??
Your daughter is lucky to have you as a mom. This is an INCREDIBLE list. Well done.

    • Helen says:

aw thanku Richela! And thanku for stopping by :D
So glad I wasnt the only one crazy enough to have a “shave all her skin off with Dad’s razor moment ” ;D

  10. English Mum says:

What great advice. And wow, what a hottie in that bikini!! x

  11. niki says:

that is too true! My friends and i where talking of exactly that on thursday eve…saying how beautiful and thin we where 5 years ago and how fat and frumpy we all are now and bloody hell what are we going to look like in another 5 years…frankly shocking! We should ignore the media and as long as we arent bed ridden with weight we should be happy and love the glamourousness(i knw thats not a word but you know what i mean!) of where we are at right now. Thanks for reminding us:) x
