I think the last warm days of summer are pretty special. It always feels like we are cheating the seasons a bit when the sun is still shinning so brightly in the middle of september.
So in the spirit of the season, with the sun bright so close to autumn me, big J and baby Milly headed off for a day at the beach.
The closest nicest beach to us is wells-next-the-sea in Norfolk, its a bit of a treck at two hours but so worth it!
It has the most amazing soft crumbly sand the colour of demerara and the candy coloured huts that line the beach always make me feel so totally cozy and British, like a special remnant from a more inocent time. The best part though is the pine woods that drape the edges of the beach like a lush green blanket. The smell is wonderful, nothing like the strong nose -tingily smell of pine bathroom cleaner. Its a warm cinnamony- Christmas smell that makes you want to stand still and breath it in forever!
I am sorry if it seems like I am over romantisising here but, there are certain places that hold a kind of magical perception, and for me Well’s is one of them.
It might be something to do with the fact it was the first place Big J ever took me to on a day out.
I remember being nervous because we were making the long trip on his bike (we didn’t have a car then) and I had to hold on tight to him and trust in him completely.
It rained hard on the way and it was a kind of scary/exciting journey I never forgot.
When we arrived there the sun came beaming out and we had the most wonderful day.
Even a sqabble on the boating lake near the beach ( I am the worst canoe partner in the world, ever apparently , we ended up going around in very embarrassing circles in the middle of a very busy stretch of water! ) can’t mar my memory of that day, and although we have been countless times since, in many different seasons we have never had a bad day.
Good bye lovely summer you have been fun!…
