I am still in my pyjamas, there is a pile of holiday washing to be done and my shoes are still full of sand but I couldn’t wait to write!
Me , Big Jay, baby Milly, Elli, Jack and granny J all packed up our ancient land rover and heeded off to Devon for a lovely British holiday.
Like many people I haven’t spent a holiday in England since I was a child, Always discarding old blighty in favour of more exotic climbs but this year with Milly still so small we decided to go with the current trend and book in the Uk.
I have to admit I wasn’t expecting to be blown away, but even if it rained every day we would be getting away and the kids would get to be by the sea.
How wrong I was, as we came off the motor way (after 7 hours!) and headed in to the west country the landscape seemed to change, we were surrounded on all sides by beautiful rolling hills and the biggest bluest sky full of white candyfloss clouds, it was so big and surreal I almost expected to hear a choir of alelulah in the background! We headed down to Devon through to many winding roads and set into the hills above the beautiful crystal blue sea was our home for a week. A totally retro stone and timber building that looked like Hugh Heffner’s seventies hideaway! With its curvy 60ft balcony and quirky inside space it was a perfect backdrop to our Devon adventure.
We stayed in an area of south Devon called Salcombe, it’s the kind of place that belongs in a worn out copy of the famous five, seemingly untouched since the fifties. The beaches and coves were breathtakingly beautiful and the little harbour town of Salcombe was all little dressing up box style boutiques and high class shops like Jack Wills. The place seemed to be home to the “old money” sailing community and was full of rich looking retired folks and super polite posh kid’s with tanned bodies, big hair all speaking the queens English perfectly! Some young boy even called me miss!
The whole week seemed to continue in glorious Technicolor, with every sunny day passing way too quickly! I can’t wait to paint what I remember and I can’t wait to go back….

What about the haunted bungalow??? I want to know. I want to know. I want to know. (If you can’t figure it out, I’m chanting and clapping.)
Lol, I knew you were gonna be disapointed! Funny thing is no-body mentioned that they felt weird about the place until we got home and I started talking about booking it again for a winter stay. Then Big J Ellie and Jack all said they felt this *presence* the whole time we were there. I felt it too it was really strong. I had to put a blanket over my mirror in the bedroom as I swear I caught things moving in it. The whole town had an underling spooky feel…. it was a strange but beautiful place.
that sounds mysterious! wonder if you can find information about the owner or previous owner. it has the makings of a really good book. The way you describe the town, as if it was untouched by time, seems otherworldly. That and the haunted bungalow. Hmm, I hear JK Rowling is looking for something to write about! Or maybe Stephen King can pay a visit.
I love Steven king!!! if he’s going..u and me should go with him…as guides! ;D ..Can u imagine that?? I would be a total spook fest! X
I think the story should go like this: a stylish artist/mom and her family of five go on holiday in the sleepy seaside town of Salcombe. When they get there, everything is idyllic at first: cotton candy clouds set against a bright blue sky, white sailboats dotting the shoreline, well dressed children and their parents sitting in outdoor cafes. But at night, something changes…in THE HAUNTED BUNGALOW!!!
Or something like that. We should get Stephen King for sure…:)
